But the complex truth behind Iris's marriage defies Ruth's understanding, and as the sisters race toward safety, a dogged Soviet KGB officer forces them to make a heartbreaking choice between two irreconcilable loyalties. Within days, Ruth is on her way to Moscow, posing as the wife of counterintelligence agent Sumner Fox in a precarious plot to extract the Digbys from behind the Iron Curtain. Were they eliminated by the Soviet intelligence service Or have the Digbys defected to Moscow with a trove of the West's most vital secrets Four years later, Ruth Macallister receives a postcard from the twin sister she hasn't seen since their catastrophic parting in Rome in the summer of 1940, as war engulfed the continent and Iris fell desperately in love with an enigmatic United States Embassy official named Sasha Digby. The world is shocked by the family's sensational disappearance. In the autumn of 1948, Iris Digby vanishes from her London home with her American diplomat husband and their two children. The New York Times bestselling author of Her Last Flight returns with a gripping and profoundly human story of Cold War espionage and family devotion. ![]() ![]() ![]() He then exploits their flaws against them by giving them the tools to destroy themselves. Edmond uses multiple aliases, such as the Count of Monte Cristo, Lord Wilmore, Abbé Busoni, and Sinbad the Sailor to create a new mysterious identity after his escape from prison and to earn the trust and confidence of the people he wishes to get vengeance on. Published in France in 1844, the historical fiction novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas tells the story of how Edmond Dantès, a kind young man, is imprisoned due to false accusations of treason and betrayed by people he knows or is around, such as Fernand, Danglars, Caderousse, and Villefort, and avenges these injustices after his escape from prison. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, justice is “the maintenance or administration of what is just especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments.” Because it is and has always been important to people and in society, numerous works of literature have been written on this topic. ![]() Justice is a universal idea that has existed since human civilization began. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sister Holiday is terrible at investigation, mishandling physical evidence and hiding it from the police, and quickly becomes a prime suspect herself. All of this adds up to a promising premise, but it never gels. As the number of suspects multiplies, more fires and more deaths occur, and Sister Holiday’s mission becomes more urgent. Sister Holiday is horrified but also galvanized-she’s determined to solve the crime despite having no background in investigation. Then someone sets a fire at the school that results in serious injuries to two students and the death of one of the school’s janitors. But she’s been welcomed into the tiny order of the Sisters of the Sublime Blood (total members: four nuns) and is doing her best at “serving the impossible truth of queer piety” as a music teacher at a struggling parochial school in New Orleans. Sister Holiday has a somewhat unusual background for a Catholic nun: former punk musician, lesbian with a chaotic romantic history, enthusiastic substance abuser, and survivor of family tragedy. A nun with a wild past investigates crimes close to home. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tattoo is the story of how Salander and Blomkvist uncover an epic international financial fraud, two serial killers, and solve the 36-year-old mystery of a missing 16-year-old girl. This high-tech thriller introduces the trilogy's stars: journalist/lady lover Mikael Blomkvist and the girl with the dragon tattoo herself, vigilante-hacktivist-PI Lisbeth Salander. Posthumous awards (that's right, Larsson's dead – more on that in a minute) from Sweden, South Africa, and the UK, to name a few, are piling up as we speak (or, rather, as we write). ![]() Columbia Pictures has the North American movie rights, so look out for the Hollywood versions ( source). The trilogy has sold almost thirty million copies, in over forty countries ( source), and has so far spawned a trilogy of Swedish films. Tattoo was first published in Sweden under Larsson's original title Män som hatar kvinnor, or Men Who Hate Women, in 2005. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is the first novel in Stieg Larsson's stunningly popular Millennium trilogy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Second night: All problems are interpersonal relationships problem. ![]() ![]() You just lack courage…courage to be happy.” “Your unhappiness cannot be blamed on your past or your environment. “The important thing is not what one is born with, but what use one makes of that equipment.” “People are not driven by past causes, but move towards goals that they themselves set…” “…self being is determined not by our experiences themselves, but by the meaning we give them.” The book is presented as a dialogue spread across five nights where the two participants talk about: We only need to focus on now and present. For instance, Freud and Jung believed that the past effects future, the Trauma Theory, however, Adler propagated past has no effect to future. Freud and Jung focused on result, while Adler focused on process and purpose. Adler was a contemporary of Freud and Jung, but he claimed a different stance than that of Freud and Jung. The book is based largely on theories of Alfred Adler and is structured as a dialogue between a philosopher and a youth. It is traditionally drawn using only one brushstroke as a meditative practice in letting go of the mind and allowing the body to create, as the singular brushstroke allows for no modifications. For the uninitiated, Enso is a sacred symbol in Zen Buddhism meaning circle, or sometimes, circle of togetherness. The cover of the book has a red Enso symbol drawn on it, or so I thought once I first picked up the book. ![]() ![]() ![]() What do we need to know? Ryan Kingston or King for short, is a good guy: ever-present, always thoughtful, straight-laced, a great friend, khaki and white polo shirt wearing, consummate milk drinker. And man, did Hunting deliver in this book. If you’re like me, you ran for this book because (1) Ryan Kingston, the “perfect” friend to Shippy in Hunting’s second book of the All in Series, A Favor for a Favor was dreamy, but needed mussing and (2) Hunting was going to do what she does best: bring a heroine to mess Kingston up. This idea runs thoughtfully through Helena Hunting’s newest book, A Secret for A Secret. It highlights our differences but reminds us that those differences are complements to each other. More than anything, this trope brings about the greatest insight into the human experience. ![]() I am fairly certain that most romance readers love the “opposites attract” trope. ![]() |
